The Birkin Costs €9,600. Why Some People Pay Double

The Edit N° 01 – The Birkin costs €9,600. Why some people pay double

There is one bag you don't buy. You earn it. Walking into the boutique with a credit card isn't enough: you have to be chosen. And for forty years, that is exactly what has made it the most coveted object in fashion.

But this October something happened that seemed impossible until recently: the Birkin myth showed a crack. Let's start from the beginning.

It all began on a plane

It's 1984. Jane Birkin, actress and singer, finds herself seated next to Jean-Louis Dumas, then chairman of Hermès. She complains that there is no elegant bag big enough for everything a woman who works, travels and is a mother carries with her. Dumas takes note. The Birkin is born.

The first one, made to measure for her, had details no later version ever had: the initials J.B. on the flap, a non-removable shoulder strap, a space designed for baby bottles. Jane carried it every day for nine years.

In July 2025 that same bag, worn by use, went under the hammer at Sotheby's in Paris for €8.6 million, bought over the phone by a private Japanese collector. It is the most expensive handbag ever sold at auction.

The list price (that almost nobody gets to pay)

In January 2026 Hermès raised its European prices by 7 to 9%. This is what a Togo leather Birkin costs in the boutique today:

Model 2025 2026 Increase
Birkin 25 €8,950 €9,600 +7.3%
Birkin 30 €9,800 €10,600 +8.2%
Birkin 35 €10,600 €11,600 +9.4%

Sounds simple. It isn't. Birkins are not on display, cannot be reserved online, and there is no official waiting list. The bag is offered to clients the boutique knows. According to resellers interviewed by Reuters, before receiving that offer a client typically spends between $10,000 and $20,000 on other Hermès products.

A system so opaque that in 2024 two Californian shoppers sued Hermès, arguing that selling the Birkin only to those who had already spent broke competition rules. In September 2025 a federal judge dismissed the antitrust claims. For now, the system stands.

The paradox: pre-owned is worth more than new

Those who don't want to wait, or are never chosen, turn to the resale market. And there, prices explode. According to broker Bernstein, in 2022 a Birkin 25 resold on average for 2.6 times its boutique price. For years the Birkin was described as a better investment than gold.

Paid under €10,000 in the boutique, resold for over €25,000.

The crack in the myth

On 21 October 2026 Reuters published an investigation that has the whole industry talking.

  • 1.7× – the boutique price: the new average resale premium for the Birkin 25 (Bernstein, Q3 2026), down from 2.6× in 2022.
  • £24,000 – what an unworn black Birkin 25 resells for in London today: about £4,000 less than in 2022.
  • 6–7× – how many more Birkins and Kellys are listed on the resale market than before the pandemic, according to UBS.
  • 6 out of 9 – resellers interviewed who saw prices fall over the past year.

The reason is almost obvious: more bags in circulation means less rarity. And with Hermès raising list prices every year, the margin for those who buy to resell keeps shrinking. "We believe the nature of the business is changing," UBS analysts wrote.

Not everyone agrees: Fashionphile, one of the leading US resellers, says its prices have held firm and even risen slightly. The debate is open.

So, is the Birkin still a dream?

Yes. But perhaps a more honest one. Each Birkin takes about 15 hours of craftsmanship, and Hermès opens on average just one new workshop a year. The scarcity is real. What is changing is the idea that it's a safe bet, a bag that must be worth more tomorrow.

The lesson applies to all luxury: you buy it because you love it, because you'll wear it for years, because it says something about who you are. Not because the price can only go up.

The T.LUXY point of view

We have always believed this. Since 2005 we have been buying luxury fashion stock directly at the source, which lets us offer authentic pieces from the great houses at a fair price, with no waiting lists and no need to "earn" a bag.

The smartest luxury isn't the one you pay double for. It's the one you choose.
